You’ve Changed

This is a guest post by Susan Mowder.  She is the owner of The STYLE Principle, a wardrobe-styling firm based in Chicago, IL. You can find and follow her on her The Style Principle website.

But Has Your Wardrobe? You've been wearing clothes since you can remember—haven't shown up naked yet!  There were the "looking good" moments, the "really, it was the fashion" seasons, and the "what was I thinking" bloopers. Just when you thought you had your look going in the right direction (or a direction), life happened got the perfect job, were promoted, switched careers; you got married, had kids, got divorced; you gained weight, lost weight, same weight- but it moved!

You are not the same person you were six months ago, or even six weeks ago, and not six years ago. You've changed…..but have your clothes, your style, your image?  Is your current style reflecting the dynamic, intelligent, confident, person you are today?  Every so often, you need to take a long look in the mirror, and honestly see what is being reflected back.  Is your current style reinforcing your professional message or distracting from it?

If the answer is yes, it is reinforcing my message, great job!  If the answer is no, it’s distracting from my professional message, time for a change.  First, make a list of how you want to be perceived professionally by others.  Then, take each word, and list the dress, hair, makeup, etc. of a person you would describe with that word.  For example, someone who is confident would wear clothes that are fit properly; hair would be in an updated style, etc. If easier to identify “when you see it”–then the next time you “see it,” take notes!  Finally, apply similar techniques to your style.  You can’t copy someone else’s style, but you can apply the same techniques–just do it your way!
