According to BusinessDictionary.com, the definition of Value Creation is the performance of actions that increase the worth of goods, services or even a business. Many business operators now focus on value creation both in the context of creating better value for customers purchasing its products and services, as well as for shareholders in the business who want to see their stake appreciate in value. Let's make it personal. We, as individuals, have a need to create value in our work and be recognized for it in return. Here are four steps to creating value in your career:

Are you consciously putting your best foot forward? Is your best self on constant display for co-workers? Are there times your intentions don’t line up with actual accomplishments? To assess where you add and create value, you must first review and list the behaviors you display on a regular basis. Once the list has been created, you must eliminate behaviors that are derailing your goals or not adding value (i.e., social butterfly; although you are popular you must stay late to finish assignments causing you to feel out of balance). Sometimes it is hard for us to see ourselves how we really are; enlist a trusted (and truthful) co-worker to provide honest feedback.
Fill the Gap
To put value-creating behaviors in motion, we must identify what must be accomplished, what we need to do, and then do it. It’s not enough to know what needs to be done; we must act (quickly)! When there is no space between what needs to be done and the completion of the objectives, the ‘who adds value’ becomes obvious.
Say exactly what you mean; choose each and every word carefully. There is an adage that actions speak louder than words, and while that is 100% true, we must remember that our word choice is equally important. To continue adding value, we must communicate what we are doing and get followers. This means focusing our message on what we want to accomplish, as opposed to what we do not want to accomplish. For example; our focus here is ‘how to create value’ as opposed to ‘avoiding distractions.’ Demonstrate your integrity through clear, straightforward communication. It’s efficient, valuable and will never be confused with “spin.
Pride is a driver of delivering value. We want to make a difference, and be appreciated for our hard work. If you take the time to assess behaviors, fill the gap, follow a process, and communicate both progress and results you will be taking the necessary steps toward increasing your value creation.
Question: What do you do to create value?
