Self-Recognition

Seventy-eight percent of workers said being recognized for their good work motivates them in their jobs.  My question is why are workers looking outside of themselves for motivation?  All too often individuals look outside themselves for recognition, approval, and merit.  What would happen if instead we looked within for motivation, truth, and worth?

We can not control those around us.  Whether they are spouses, children or managers, each person is an individual with individual focuses, thoughts, and actions.  Most times the motivations of others are self-focused and/or self-serving.  Even the best intentioned of us, if we are truthful, take care of ourselves first as we see the world through our own eyes and perspectives.

Recognize the Source

The key to happiness at work is to not try to manipulate our managers to provide us what we need, but to take the time to understand their point of view.  Are they not rewarding us for our hard work because their management is putting pressure on them?  Are there things at home which are affecting their work life?  Are their own fears and desires overtaking a natural tendency to appreciate others?  Before feeling like a victim or feeling as if your efforts are overlooked, take the time to recognize the source.  What human issues is your manager experiencing?  How could their stressors take them away from focusing on the good you are doing?

Next, be your own cheerleader.  Know the work you do.  Know the extra effort you take.  Know the gifts you give to your company.  Know the ways you are growing in your position and as a professional.  There is no need to receive recognition from others when you are aware of your own achievements.  Make a list of accomplishments, learnings, growth, and successes.  Reference this list when you are feeling down and use the activity of creating a list daily to help you stay focused on all that you provide.

We can not control anyone around us, including management.  On a daily basis stay focused on all that you do at work and at home.  Give yourself the recognition, love, and acceptance you desire.  No one knows better than you the gifts you give.  Spend the time congratulating yourself for all you are and sooner or later you will stop looking outside of yourself for that which lies within.

Question:  Are you recognized for your contribution?
